With the growing awareness of the negative impacts of indiscriminate consumption of the Earth’s forest resources, the need arose for a control system to distinguish and highlight the proper management of this natural resource.
The Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC®) is an independent non-governmental organization founded in 1993 by various environmental and social organizations, trade and industry representatives, indigenous peoples’ associations, forest communities, and certification bodies from 25 countries. FSC® introduced voluntary certification standards regarding:
- Forest Management (FSC® FM): from land planning, utilization, to logging. In this case, the issuance of the certificate and use of the logo indicate that the forest is managed according to environmental, social, and economic standards.
- Product traceability (FSC® COC): monitoring the product from its origin to the point of sale (chain of custody), from timber concentration, to sawing, to the production of semi-finished or finished products. In this case, the certificate and certification logo (placed directly on the product) indicate that a product is made with material sourced from responsibly managed forests.
